According to Yonhap News,

(BUSAN=Yonhap News) According to the world ranking of convention cities by the Union of International Associations (UIA) in 2013, Busan ranked among top 10 convention cities in the world, among 1,465 cities in 174 countries surveyed.

The City of Busan hosted 166 international meetings last year. It hosted 120 A-class conferences, 28 B-class conferences and 18 C-class conferences.

A-class meetings are the ones either hosted or sponsored by international organizations, and B & C are the ones that are not hosted by international organizations but by their domestic branches in Korea. Among these, meetings with more than 300 participants and duration of 3 days or longer are categorized as B-class, and meetings with more than 250 participants and duration of 2 or more days are categorized as C-class.

This feat was achieved in 8 years, since the city ranked 73rd in 2005. In 2012, it ranked 19th in the world and 5th in Asia. Busan also ranked 1st in terms of growth rate of international convention cities. Notably, Busan is the only Asian city among the top 10 cities which is not a capital city.

“To see this day, we have been working hard to strengthen the city’s MICE industry, as well as on international marketing. We will make further efforts to make the city of Busan an international convention city recognized by all,” said Shin, Yong-sam, a city official.

According to UIA, Singapore remained world’s no.1 host of international conferences, followed by Brussels, Vienna, Seoul, Tokyo, Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, Busan, and London.

The Union of International Associations (UIA) is a world renowned research institute and documentation centre, based in Brussels, Belgium. Since 1960 the UIA has prepared statistics on the international meetings that have taken place worldwide in the preceding year.
