(CHUNGJU=Yonhap News) An international festival for chopsticks, whose history is more than 2,000-year-old, opened in the central South Korean city of Cheongju on Thursday, featuring the distinctive chopstick cultures of South Korea, China and Japan.

The 2nd Chopsticks Fair and Festival features seminars, exhibitions, concerts and contests.

In particular, some 3,000 sets of chopsticks are displayed at an exhibition.

Displayed chopsticks include Korean ones dating back to the Three Kingdoms period (BC 57-AD 668), Chinese ones from Liao (916-1125) and Qing (1616-1912) Dynasties and Japanese ones from the Edo period (1603-1867).

Chopstick masters also show off their works and chopstick-making . 

Cheongju, 137 kilometers south of Seoul, initiated the festival last November, designating Nov. 11 as Chopsticks Day.

This year, nine cities, which have been selected as "Culture Cities in East Asia," takes part in the 18-day festival -- Gwangju, Cheongju and Jeju from South Korea, Quanzhou, Qingdao and Ningbo from China and Yokohama, Niigata and Nara from Japan.
