According to Yonhap News,

(CHEONGJU=Yonhap News) North Chungcheong Province has become a popular destination for foreign medical tourists to Korea.

According to the province on May 5, a total of 4,048 foreigners visited North Chungcheong last year for medical treatment, up 49.2% from the 2,714 in 2015.

The growth rate is 26.5 percentage points higher than the national average (22.7%), and third highest city or government following North Gyeongsang (87.6%) and Daegu (62.5%).

The greatest number of foreign medical tourists to the province last year were from China (38.6%), followed by Mongolia (6.5%), Russia (6,1%), and Uzbekistan (4.4%).

North Chungcheong started actively promoting the local medical tourism industry in 2013, creating a team within the local government to be exclusively in charge of its new project, and opened a promotion center in China the following year.

As a result, the number of foreign medical tourists surged from 816 in 2013 to over 4,000 in 2016.

The province currently operates promotion centers in 5 overseas locations: Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia; Almaty, Kazakhstan; Zhengzhou, China; Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam; and Yakutsk, Russia.
