(CHUNGJU=Yonhap News) The city of Chungju in North Chungcheong Province announced May 3 its plans to install large artificial aquatic plant islands on Chungju Lake to serve as a natural spawning ground and a tourist attraction.
The artificial aquatic plant islands will cover 3,500 square meters on Chungju Lake in Jongmin-dong, and will also help prevent algae from forming, improving the quality of water.
A total of KRW 1 trillion will be spent of making the islands, which is set to begin later this month and end in late June.
Under the theme "In search of stars," the 5 islands will be made in the shape of stars, and utilized as an eco-tourism resource.
The city expects the new installations will reduce the annual levels of nitrogen and potassium by 11.4 percent and 18 percent, respectively.
