LS Industrial Systems Co. (LSIS), a South Korean manufacturer of electric power and automation equipment, has kicked off operations of the country’s largest floating solar power plant.

The company on Thursday unveiled its new floating solar power plant on Cheongpung Lake in Chungju, North Chungcheong Province, 10 months after breaking ground in February. The new solar power farm is built near Chungju Dam, the country’s largest multipurpose concrete dam.

The floating solar power facility has the country’s largest capacity of up to 3 megawatts (MW), according to the company. It can generate 4,031 megawatt-hour (MWh) clean energy per year, which is enough to provide power to 950 households or 2,800 individuals.

An unnamed official from LSIS said that with the completion of the country’s largest floating power plant’s construction, the company has gained competitive edge in the rapidly growing floating solar power farm industry.

LSIS, one of Korea’s leading players in the floating solar farm industry, also built the country’s first floating solar power plant near Hapcheon dam jointly with state-owned water management company Korea Water Resources Corporation in 2013. The company also developed the world’s first module exclusively dedicated to solar power farms.

LSIS won a 9 billion won ($8.37 million) engineering, procurement, and construction deal to build the latest floating solar power farm from Korea Water Resources Corporation in February. The company may earn more of similar orders as the state-run water management corporation plans to expand the country’s solar power capacity to 550 megawatts by 2022.
