(DANYANG=Yonhap News) Danyang County in Chungcheongbuk-do announced on March 14 that it would invest KRW 2.44 billion in five trial agricultural technology projects—encompassing new cash crops, the development of human resources, farming machinery, and agricultural development—toward enhancing the competitiveness of local agriculture.

Two-third of the total budget, or KRW 1.65 billion, will go toward developing new cash crops such as the omija berries.

Another KRW 0.28680 billion will go to securing farming machinery, including pieces of equipment to be rented out; KRW 0.26 billion, to developing young entrepreneurship and other forms of human resources; KRW 0.17 billion, to the development of automatic and labor-saving cultivation processes concerning dry-field and food crops; and KRW 0.0726 billion, to other agricultural development activities.

The county’s plan also envisions strengthening the competitiveness of local crops such as ensuring the stable supply of chili peppers and garlic even in the face of climate change.

Lee Jang-hee, director of the Danyang Agricultural Technology Center, commented, “Increasing imports, the aging of the rural population, and the rising cost of farming materials and equipment are increasing burdens on agrarian communities. We need to find and launch diverse new policy projects that would support the growth of small, yet strong, farmer businesses.”
