"Animal Model Evaluation Facility" to be established in Osong, Cheongju

(CHEONGJU=Yonhap News) "Animal Model Evaluation Facility" will be built in Osong, Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju-si to support development of the cutting-edge bio pharmaceuticals.

According to a lawmaker Oh Je-se on September 11, the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) confirmed a plan to build a facility for animal model evaluation in Osong.

The animal model means laboratory mice with no immunity, which has human's physiology functions due to transplants of human's stem cells or tissues.

To build the facility, KRW 15.6 billion will be injected by next year.

Once completed, the facility will support research and development of customized medicine and pharmaceuticals including carcinostatis substance and liver disease treatment.

It will have a large-scale clean booth, facilities of biological safety level, and clean breeding room inside.

The lawmaker Oh said, "We will be able to conduct clinical tests which used to be outsourced to overseas facilities," adding that "it will result in reducing KRW 2 trillion social cost through development of underdeveloped infectious disease treatment and prevention of infectious diseases."
