CHUNGCHEONGBUK-DO < invest Korea

The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) said on July 18 that it will proceed with a project to build a multipurpose synchrotron radiation source, to be located in Ochang Techno Polis, Cheongju-si, Chungbuk-do, with public recruitment for a project leader.

The project will require business expense of 1.0454 trillion won in total by June 2027. Ochang, Chungbuk-do was selected as the site through public recruitment from local governments in May last year. And it passed a preliminary feasibility study by the MSIT. The site of project is 540,000㎡ with the size of facilities being 69,400 ㎡.

Considering the importance of the project, the MSIT designated the Korea Basic Science Institute, a support institute for large research instrument and equipment, as a project leader organization.

Synchrotrons use electrons to produce intense beams of light more than a million times brighter than the sun.

It is called a "super-microscope" which enables researchers to observe what happens in a very tiny nano scope, thus useful for materials and component industries such as semiconductors and displays, as well as new drug development.

Although there are currently two synchroton radiation sources (SRS) in Pohang-si, Gyeongbuk-do, researchers have to wait for several months as demand for SRS rose from academics and industries.

With export restrictions of Japan in 2019, the importance of research on materials, components, and equipment has been emphasized. Thus, the voice for a new SRS has risen. The Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology held a deliberative committee, confirming 'long-term road-map and management strategy for large SRS' in March last year, which gave a green light to this project.

The governor of Chungbuk-do said, "we will actively cooperate to foster the cutting-edge industry and strengthen the competitiveness of science and technology, not to mention the development of Chungbuk-do."
