According to Yonhap News,
Chungbuk-do announced on February 3 that it attracted 'Liquefied Hydrogen Test Support Center' in Eumseong Geumwang Techno Valley Industrial Complex through the public competition of the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE) and the Korea Gas Safety Corporation.
This center is to support the government's roadmap and basic implementation plan for revitalization of hydrogen economy, and life-cycle test and evaluation of liquified hydrogen products produced from facility investment including liquified hydrogen manufacturing facility and charging station by the private sector including SK, Hyosung and Doosan.
With the investment of KRW 33.25 billion project budget, it will be established in Geumwang Industrial Complex A2-5 Block on 5,215 square meters of building area with the goal of commencing operation in 2025.
H2 must be cooled below -253 °C to exist as a liquid. As liquid takes less space (about 1/800) than storing it as a gas, it becomes easier to transport and space.
As liquid hydrogen can be stored at atmospheric pressure, unlike gaseous hydrogen which requires high-pressure, it features higher storage safety.
For this reason, domestic large businesses are speeding up to develop products and technologies using liquid hydrogen in existing gaseous hydrogen development.
To supply parts to liquid hydrogen plants nationwide, involved companies must obtain certification from this center.
Chungbuk has focused on integrating related facilities near Chungbuk Innovation City to build a national hydrogen cluster of safety, standardization and education.
In Chungbuk Innovation City, the Korea Gas Safety Corporation and the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, in charge of national hydrogen safety, are located.
Also, it is home to the Hydrogen Gas Safety Experience Training Center, Hydrogen Car Part Test and Evaluation Center, Hydrogen Charing Station Part Test Center, and Energy Industry Convergence Complex, and other related projects.
