According to Yonhap News,

Yeongdong-gun announced on March 30 that the contracted design for the Illite Knowledge Industry Center had been completed.

The center will be built on a site of 15,889 square meters with one basement floor and four above-ground floors with a total floor area of 8,027 square meters. The project cost is KRW 20 billion.

Yeongdong-gun will start construction in August after selecting a contractor. If everything goes as planned, the construction of the center will be completed in December 2023.

In the center, there will be 37 factory rooms, a start-up operation support room, and Illite Exhibition Hall.

A county official said, "Illite is used for natural cosmetics, livestock supplements, and eco-friendly building materials," adding "we will grow Illite as Yeongdong's growth-driving industry for the next 100 years in the future".

Illite is a mineral with various effects such as heavy metal adsorption, antibiotic, and far-infrared radiation. About 500 million tons of it is known to be buried in Yeongdong.

Four mining companies in this region mine around 2,500 tons of Illite annually and supply it for industrial, agricultural, and feed purposes.
