Chungju-si in Chungbuk, designated as this year's city of science and culture, proclaimed a new science-based vision for the city.
The city on Sep. 1, opened a 2022 Science and Culture City proclamation ceremony joined by roughly 400 people including local residents, entrepreneurs and more.
Since 2020, the Ministry of Science and ICT has selected yearly a municipal as Science and Culture City and supported different programs and festivals for science and culture. This project aims to vitalize science and culture in the region.
Chungju-si has become a third to be selected as the city of Science and Culture following Yusung-gu in Daejun and Gangneung-si in Gangwon-do.
The event began with the congratulatory performance followed by the progress report, congratulatory speeches, and a ceremony to declare the city of science and culture. As for the special events, Kim Seon-tae who promotes Chungju-si, and a young scientist gave lectures to the audience.
The city has not spared any effort to invest in fulfilling science infrastructure where almost half of the urban science halls are located. In addition, it has actively supported the science education project to spread science and culture across the region.
The project's slogan is 'Chungju the city of water, much closer to science and culture.' In line with that, the city plans to hold the artist survival web contest water, as well as water resource media art exhibition, and carbon youth climate camp.
Also, Chungju formed a walk of science in the 430 m area of the Chungju Cultural Startup Regeneration Hub Center in the region by partnering with local activists in order for all the citizens to experience contents of science and culture every single day.
Mayor of Chungju City Cho Gil-hyeong said, “2022 is a meaningful year to inform the entire nation of the new aspect of Chungju as a city of science and culture," adding, "it would be a great pleasure to have you join our journey of Science and Culture City."
