According to Yonhap News,
Cheongju's lawmakers and north Chungcheong (Chungbuk) Governor Lee Si-jong forecast that Chungbuk is highly likely to be designated a Free Economic Zone (FEZ).
Democratic United Party Lawmaker Roh Yeong-min said in a press conference that "After Chungbuk submits its modified plan reflecting recommendations made by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE), the final decision will be made this month."
He added, "Several government agencies, including prime minister's office, Board of Audit and Inspection and the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, had been opposed to the additional designation of FEZ. However, they eventually decided to accept the request of Chungbuk." He confirmed the decision from the minister of the MKE.
New Frontier Party Lawmaker Jeon U-taek is also optimistic about the designation of Chungbuk as a FEZ. He said, "I think the designation will be finally approved within this year."
Chungbuk Governor Lee Si-jong also expressed his positive prospects for the designation in a luncheon with reporters, saying that "We have emphasized the necessity and importance of designating Chungbuk as a FEZ to the MKE and other government agencies for the past two years. We finally reached an agreement on the necessity with the government."
The initial plan focusing on building an aviation maintenance, repair and operation complex near Cheongju Airport is reported to have been modified to establish an environmentally friendly IT and BT convergence complex.
