(CHEONGJU = Newsis) Cheongju International Airport is expected to secure the budget for remodeling its duty-free shop, amenities and the departure hall.
The airport will receive KRW 6.7 billion from Korea Airports Corporation (KAC) in 2014 for remodeling its facilities, said Byun Jae-il of the Democratic Party.
The number of annual users of Cheongju Airport has steadily increased, but many pointed out poor relevant infrastructure compared to the other airports every year.
In an attempt to resolve the issue, the KAC plans to secure KRW 6.7 billion from next year’s main budget for remodeling works and floor replacement at the passenger terminal and replacement of boarding bridges.
The remodeling of the passenger terminal includes the expansion work of the departure hall and improvement on the duty-free shop and amenities. A total of KRW 2 billion is expected to be invested.
“The number of users of Cheongju Airport in 2013 was about 1.17 million as of October, which is about 5.8 percent increase compared with the corresponding period last year,” said Byun. “The airport was able to finance itself by promoting privatization during the last five years.”
