(SEOUL = Yonhap News) Jecheon will begin the construction of Korea’s first floating aerodrome at the Chengpung lakeside in March 2014.

The city announced on December 31, 2013 that it obtained permission from Seoul Regional Aviation Administration (SRAA) for installation of floating aerodrome at the Chengpung lakeside.

The city planned to finish the construction of the aerodrome until last August, but the debate with Korea Water Resources Corporation and the Ministry of Environment over whether the runway of the aerodrome were subject to permission for occupation and use has delayed the project.

Three parties came to an agreement and the city will invest a total of KRW 2 billion in Chengpung lakeside to begin the construction of the aerodrome. The aerodrome will comprise runway of 200m length and 60m of width, landing pad (36,000 m2), taxi channel (24,000m2), turning area (11,304 m2) and anchorage (927 m2).

The aerodrome will be used for flightseeing, forest fire observation and various events.

“The aerodrome is expected to play a pivotal role in vitalizing local tourism industry along with Cheongpung Lake and monorail at Bi-bong Mountain,” a city official said.

There are only two civil airports in Korea, and the riverbed and reclaimed lands are used for the airfield for the light aviation aircraft.

At the end of 2011, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport decided to build landing fields and floating aerodromes in a bid to vitalize the aero travel and leisure industry.

The proposed airfield sites are Gimje in the North Jeolla Province, Goseong in the South Gyeongsang Province, and Jecheon was the top priority for the floating aerodrome.
