Hosted by the government of North Chungcheong Province, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the local municipal government, the Osong International Bio Industry Exposition is set to kick off on Sept. 16 for a 17-day run in Osong, some 120 kilometers south of Seoul.

Under the theme of "The Secret of Life, Beautiful Future," the exhibitions will showcase how the nation's bio industry has developed over the past decades and provide a glimpse into a future that employs many of the industry's finest innovations.

"My goal is to make Osong a world-class hub of biotechnology and North Chungcheong one of top three biotechnology centers in the world," Lee Si-jong, governor of North Chungcheong Province, said in an interview with Yonhap News Agency.

Lee said the expo will be the culmination of more than a decade of hosting similar international events since 2002, as he has set his sights on promoting North Chungcheong and Osong as the world's leading biotech centers.

He also noted that Osong is home to six of the nation's largest health policy-making institutes, including the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, and other leading research institutions.

It has also successfully hosted an international beauty expo last year, furthering its global stature.

Lee said the goal of the exposition this year is to attract at least 700,000 visitors, including 35,000 from abroad.

It will host 223 companies from in and outside of the country and some 700 expo booths, including 200 from overseas.

More than 24.9 billion won (US$24.6 million), including 6.7 billion from state coffers, has been earmarked for the event, Lee said.

At the event, participants will get a chance to make cosmetics and carry out scientific experiments to glean basic knowledge of life sciences, organizers said.

Large-scale model organs will also be displayed outdoors, and several rides themed around human cells will allow visitors have fun learning about science, according to organizers.
