Int'l bio expo wraps up successful 17-day run
More than 900,000 visitors, well over the original target of 700,000, came to the exposition, which showcased the nation's recent history in the field and provided a glimpse into a future that employed many of the innovations currently in development, organizers said.
"This exposition has shown that North Chungcheong Province can indeed become one of the top 10 bio valleys in the world," said provincial governor Lee Si-jong, who was the chief organizer of the event. He was speaking to some 2,000 local officials at the closing ceremony on Sunday.
More than 4,000 buyers from in and out of the country sealed deals worth US$20 million, according to the organizers.
At Sunday's ceremony, officials representing 1.6 million North Chungcheong residents signed a statement reiterating their goal of making South Korea one of the top seven biotech powerhouses by 2020 and Osong a top three bioindustry center by 2030.
The ceremony closed with a percussion performance that symbolized Goesan, a North Chungcheong town set to host a world organic exposition next fall.
The 2015 Goesan International Organic & Industry Fair will be held next September with the goal of making organic food more popular in South Korea.
