(GOESAN=Yonhap News) An international organic food expo concluded Sunday in South Korea's central agricultural town of Goesan after a declaration that aims to promote sustainable agriculture and ecological life was adopted, organizers said Monday.

The 2015 Goesan International Organic Expo, which began in the mountainous town in North Chungcheong Province for a 24-day run under the theme "Organic Life, Science Meets the Public," brought together more than a million visitors, surpassing the target of 660,000.

More than 60,000 foreigners, including 1,140 buyers from 20 countries, visited the site, and contracts worth about US$2.68 million were made during the expo, organizers added.

In 19 rounds of academic events, including a symposium on the challenges and future of the world's organic industry, 4,430 experts and visitors from 37 countries participated.

At the end of the expo, the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) adopted the Organic 3.0 Goesan Declaration in an effort to establish a turning point for the world organic industry.

"Let's overcome the challenges faced by the agricultural industry, farming communities and farmers," North Chungcheong Governor Lee Si-jong said, proposing to designate the day of declaration as the World Organic Food Day.

The event was the first of its kind to attract the world's top two organic food bodies: the International Society of Organic Agriculture Research (ISOFAR) and IFOAM.
