Daejeon-led World Technopolis Association Congress Opened in Indonesia

(DAEJEON=Yonhap News) The tenth World Technopolis Association (WTA) Congress was held in the PUSPIPTEK, Tangerang Selatan, Banten Province, Indonesia on Sep 20, 2016.

About 1,000 participants including Daejeon Mayor Kwon Sun-taik and Indonesia's Coordinating Human Development and Culture Affairs Minister Puan Maharani attended the opening ceremony.




The WTA is a multilateral organization established by Daejeon City. It currently has 98 members of 47 countries.

In his opening remark, Mayor Kwon said "this event will be a meaningful occasion to think about how we will cope with the era of scientific revolution," citing the historic match between Korea's professional Go player Lee Sedol and Google's artificial intelligence program AlphaGo.

In the subsequent World Innovation Forum, participants discussed on the establishment of the regional innovation system based on science technology and the need for science complex as a foundation for the local industry development.

Daejeon city also entered into a cooperation agreement with Tangerang Selatan City to forge a friendly and cooperative relationship.

Tangerang Selatan City is a newly formed city separated from Tangerang City, Banten Province in 2008. It is a science city with population of 1.49 million and home to the PUSPIPTEK, the National Centre For Research Science And Technology.
