Hanwha Systems, a South Korean defense electronics developer, and the country’s state research institute Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in Daejeon will join hands to develop a drone-detecting radar system for non-military use.

Hanwha Systems announced on Tuesday that it has signed an agreement with ETRI to cooperate in joint research and development of a commercial, electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) sensor-based radar system that can detect and track drones.

The project comes at a time when the risk of threats on key personnel and facilities in the private and public sectors is increasing due to unauthorized drone operations. The project is expected to cost 12 billion won ($10.76 million) in total, with an aim to complete the development of a radar system by the end of 2021.

The two will focus on developing a low cost, compact, lightweight and low power radar system versus those for military purposes. Hanwha Systems said the new radar system could be transported and installed by two persons without space restraints and could detect a drone that holds a near stationery position in flight.
