According to Yonhap News,

(PYEONGCHANG=Yonhap News) Having successfully hosted the 2018 Winter Olympics, the County of Pyeongchang has now set out to capitalize upon its Olympics experience by transforming itself into a new global center of sports and leisure.

The county government has established a mid- to long-term plan for achieving its new vision, based upon a study on the feasibility of organizing a leisure- and sports-themed exposition in the county.

The study shows that Pyeongchang is now equipped with an extensive range of facilities that were used in the Winter Olympics and is also home to three major resort complexes capable of accommodating a broad array of leisure and recreational activities, exhibitions, conferences, and performances.

The county, blessed with a beautiful landscape and abundance of mountains and forests, is indeed an excellent location for organizing events like the proposed exposition.

Pyeongchang intends to expand the existing infrastructure a little further and organize its exposition in 2021 successfully, by making use of the Olympics facilities, natural tourism resources, and its experience with hosting a major international event.

The expansion of the local infrastructure for sports and leisure is expected to boost the county’s tourism significantly, as the beginning of the KTX service in the region will also dramatically improve the accessibility of the county from Seoul and elsewhere in Korea.

The county government wishes to hone and apply the pro-service mindset it has developed by hosting the Olympics and transform the county into a new global center of leisure, international meetings and events, and sports.

Shim Jae-guk, county mayor, commented on March 21: “By successfully hosting the Olympics, Pyeongchang has proven its capability to evolve into a new center of winter sports.”
