According to Yonhap News,

(CHUNCHEON=Yonhap News) A new breed of corn developed by Gangwon-do is opening up export opportunities in Southeast Asia.

On April 16, Gangwon-do Agricultural Research & Extensions Services and Nonghyup Seed Center are to sign a contract to export two new breeds of corn, "Jangsu-chal" (glutenous corn) and "GW22," to overseas markets.

The contract seeks to protect the new breeds of corn as it is produced and sold overseas.

Nonghyup Seed Center plans to expand exports of the new breeds to Southeast Asia. This year, it will produce and distribute 4t of corn seeds in Cambodia to Vietnam and other surrounding countries.

Since 2013, Gangwon-do Agricultural Research & Extensions Services' corn research institute has participated in the national Golden Seed Project (GSP) to develop the most optimal corn breeds for Southeast Asia.

The successfully-exported Jangsu-chal breed adapts well to the Southeast Asian region and has been evaluated highly for its abundant yield and outstanding taste.

GW22 is a breeding corn that has a 5.9t/ha yield, much higher than other breeds in the region, and is expected to help increase growers' income.
