According to Yonhap News,

(CHUNCHEON=Yonhap News) Chuncheon city of Gangwon Province decided to expand the hiring of foreign seasonal workers in the farming season, as foreign workers were highly satisfied.

It is a short-term employment system in which foreign workers work in farms for 90 days from the day of their entry. They are to leave the country after the contract work is over.

Chuncheon City has launched the foreign seasonal worker business for the first time this year in order to solve the problem shortage of personnel in local farms.

The city established an agricultural business partnership with Batangas, Philippines and run a three-month foreign employment program.

This year, 107 Filipino workers participated in a total of 70 farms.

The workers received a monthly salary of KRW 1.69 million for 8 hours of work per day.

The survey conducted after the project by Chuncheon City showed that 82 percent of participating farms were satisfied with the foreign workers employment.

In addition, it contributed to 93 percent in solving the workforce shortage in farms, and 98 percent of respondents said they would like to hire foreign workers again next year.

Thus, the city will estimate the labor demand for farms and hire a total of 100 foreign workers from April next year.

A city official said, "Local farms have seen good results with the attitude and sincerity of the foreign workers." The official added, "We will continue to pursue the project, as it will help solve the problem of labor shortage caused by declining rural population and aging population."
