“Come to the Winter Kingdom of Gangwon-do” – Efforts Made to Attract Chinese Tourists

CHUNCHEON, Oct. 27 (Yonhap) -- On Oct. 27, Gangwon-do announced that it had hosted the Gangwon International Travel Mart along with the Korea Tourism Organization in four major cities of China for ten days from Oct. 18 to attract tourists. The event was organized to attract Chinese tourists by taking advantage of local winter festivals and winter sports of Gangwon-do that gained popularity thanks to the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

The Ski Resort Business Association of Korea, five ski resorts located in Pyeongchang-gun and specialized tour agencies visited four cities of Beijing, Shenyang, Guangzhou and Xiamen and made grand-scale marketing pitches.

More than 50,000 people expressed their interest in Gangwon-do’s winter tour programs at the B2B consulting and briefing sessions targeting the tourism industry and at a consumer event hosted for individual tourists In the coming winter season, Gangwon-do plans to link eight local winter festivals with the programs of the region’s nine ski resorts in an attempt to expand winter tour packages across the province.

To that end, Gangwon-do has developed a program by holding three meetings with local ski resorts and specialized tour agencies and is now engaged in joint PR.

By taking advantage of the recent growth of individual Chinese tourists by 20-30%, Gangwon-do plans to focus on publicizing the province’s unique tourist attractions and entertainment under the slogan “from Pyeongchang to Beijing.”

“Under the theme ‘the winter kingdom of Gangwon-do,’ we will actively cooperate with related agencies to develop Gangwon-do’s winter tour packages into Korea’s leading brand,” said Kim Chang-gyu, the chief of Tourism Marketing Division of Gangwon-do.
