Gangwon to Invest 892.6 Billion won in Environment, Forest and Energy Next Year

According to Yonhap News,

Gangwon Resources Department of Gangwon Local Government unveiled its plan early this month to invest a total of 892.6 billion won in 114 projects concerning environment, forests and energy next year.

First, Gangwon will concentrate its efforts on hosting a general assembly for the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD) in 2014.

The UNCBD is one of the three major global environment conferences along with the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

In addition, Gangwon will apply for re-designation of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) as Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in a bid to conserve the DMZ and will establish a DMZ ecology and peach park in Cheolwon.

In order to prepare for the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic in an environmentally-friendly manner, Gangwon plans to set a comprehensive environment plan in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and build a carbon-zero housing complex in Yeongwol.

Gagnwon will also work hard to get a certificate of Local Governments for Sustainability from the International Council for Local Government Initiatives.

For the certificate, the province will assign a private specialized agency to improve water quality of valleys where street food vendors are accumulated.

Most importantly, it will spend 360 billion won to build a 5,000-hectare eco-resort complex in Daegwanryeong to translate its pledge of establishing an artificial forest into action in compliance with its Olympic File submitted to the International Olympic Committee. The resort complex will be the landmark oif Pyeongchang Olympic.

Gangwon will also lay the groundwork for renewable energy production.

It will establish a 441MW-wind power generation complex by 2016 and build an 80MW-micro hydropower generation facility by 2020.

In addition, it will invest 22.7 billion won in supplying power to the marginalized who have difficulty getting access to electricity, through self-sufficient renewable energy generation facilities utilizing photovoltaic, solar and thermal power.
