Gangwon Province announced last week that Pyeongchang was named to hold the 6th International Wildland Fire Conference (IWFC).

The IWFC 2013 is the largest international event regarding wildland fires, where experts gather every four years to discuss and exchange their views on related issues.

Gangwon Province applied to hold the event when the Korea Forest Service received applications from provinces to jointly hold the conference when Korea was named as the country to hold the 6th conference in May of 2011.

The Korea Forest Service organized a judging committee September 5, held an on-site assessment on September 10 and finalized Pyeongchang Alpensia as the venue.

The 6th conference is expected to draw about 3,000 visitors from around 80 countries from October 12 to October 16, 2015.

Under the slogan of “Fire of the Past, Fire in Future,” the conference will discuss cooperative measures for fire prevention and fire extinguishing.

The conference will also include discussions, presentations, exhibitions, demonstrations, ecotourism programs and more.

Gangwon expects the conference to contribute in reinforcing capabilities to prevent and study wildland fires.

In particular, the conference will transfer Korea’s fire prevention system, greening techniques and desertification prevention technology to the world as well as promote the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.

Gangwon plans to negotiate roles and responsibilities with the Korea Forest Service and sign a business agreement.
