According to Yonhap News,

(CHUNCHEON = Yonhap News) Gangwon Province announced on Nov. 6 that three of the projects suggested by the province have been selected as the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affair (MAFRA)s’ rural industry development projects for 2014. The objective of the projects is to use the local resources in rural regions to develop a core industry in each respective region.

As part of the selection process, MAFRA held a screening committee meeting to review the project plans submitted by 28 rural regions. In the meeting, the committee made a final decision on the projects to select. In Gangwon Province, the red snow crab processing industry development project of Sokcho, the Sanyacho (wild mountain plant extract) processing industry development project of Pyeongchang and the Seorak Mountain organic food industry development project of Yangyang were selected.

The rural industry development project aims to use the tangible and intangible local resources in rural regions to develop a core strategic industry that converges primary, secondary and tertiary industries.

For example, KRW 3 billion including government grants of KRW 1.5 billion will be invested in the red snow crab processing industry development project of Sokcho to develop high value-added foods and products using red snow crabs.

Also, a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) standard will be adopted in manufacturing and sales facilities, and a franchised market will be established.

In the Sanyacho processing industry development project of Pyeongchang, a total of KRW 3 billion will be invested to develop safe and effective products such as fermented tea made from plants and medicinal herbs.

As for the Seorak Mountain organic food industry development project of Yangyang, various plants and vegetables from Seorak Mountain will be used to manufacture processed foods such as soups, dumplings and salad dressings.

A total of KRW 3 billion will be invested in the project, and profit will be generated by establishing a processing and manufacturing line and implementing differentiated marketing strategies.

Gangwon Province plans to invest a total of KRW 9 billion including government grants of KRW 4.5 billion in the three projects up to 2017 to establish an R&D infrastructure on agricultural product processing and to strengthen organizational competitiveness.

By utilizing local resources, the projects will boost the economies of rural regions and develop the rural industries into a successful example of the ‘sixth industrialization policy’, which pursues a strategy of combining the primary (manufacturing), secondary (processing) and tertiary (tourism) industries.
