(CHUNCHEON = Yonhap News) The Gangwon Province (Gangwon) announced on 12th that the province will improve the infrastructure for Yangyang International Airport in cooperation with businesses in tourism industry and relevant government agencies.

The plan is to resolve the tourists’ difficulties and improve the regional economy as the airport is expected to expand its air routes to 30 in 2014.

Gangwon expects that about 500 thousands tourists will use the airport next year.

The province will push ahead the plans to resolve issues that are constantly brought up by improving and developing tourist infrastructure for hotels, resorts, restaurants, transportations and local markets.

Accommodation facilities will offer foreign television channels and foreign language announcement service.

Restaurants will offer stand-up meals, and Chinese will be written on menus, signs and directories in restrooms.

Traffic signs will show place names, distance from the airport and junctions in Chinese.

Signboards in the buses to airport, bus terminals and airport will also be in Chinese from 1 April, 2014.

In the airport, duty free shop will be expanded and a “photo zone” will be installed with Daecheongbong of Mount Seorak in the background.

Travel agencies will be required to satisfy the specific requirements to be designated as the agencies specialized in Chinese tourists. Visitors from China will be encouraged to visit the Korean traditional markets within the province.

The province will also offer Beach designated for the Chinese tourists and tour packages such as sea fishing will be developed to meet the demands of the Chinese tourists.

Traditional markets will develop Chinese-friendly products with the luxurious gift-wrap. Details and instructions of the products will be in Chinese and vendors will learn to speak the basic Chinese conversations.

The province along with government authorities and relevant businesses will hold the “meeting for the development and improvement of tourism infrastructure for the Yangyang International Airport” last week and is determined to push ahead its plans.

“Yangyang International Airport expects up to 500 thousand visitors next year. We will work hard to ensure Chinese tourists stay and spend a fortune on tourist attractions within the province and develop the Yangyang International Airport as one of the top airports in Northeast Asia,” said Choi Moon-soon, Governor of the Gangwon Province.
