Gangwon to Develop Its Border Areas

(CHUNCHEON = Newsis) The development projects in border areas of Gangwon-do (Gangwon) are expected to gain momentum.

The province secured the biggest amount in a budget of KRW 71.2 billion among eight cities and provinces nationwide, according to an announcement of the province. The budget, which is organized by the Ministry of Security and Public Administration, aims to provide funds to development projects in border areas and island area.

A total of KRW 189.4 billion will be invested in six cities and counties near the border line, to improve the living conditions and increase local incomes.

It plans to invest KRW 2.5 billion to vitalize its tourist industry and preserve the ecosystem in the demilitarized zone (DMZ). The projects include the construction of sightseeing area in Baekam Mt. in Hwacheon and Tongil observation tower in Goseong-gun.

Marking the 60th anniversary of the DMZ in 2013, the province carried out various projects including the cultural events to promote the value of the DMZ.

This year, the province will push ahead the development of the cities and counties in border areas by hosting the DMZ World Peace Park and carrying out development projects in border areas.
