Yangyang Int’l Airport to Operate More Air Routes

(CHUNCHEON = Newsis) More air carriers are expected to operate at Yangyang International Airport.

According to Gangwon-do, airports in nine Chinese regions including Liaoning Province and Korea’s Jeju Island will be connected with the airport between April 1 and June.

Nine cities from five Northeast China were confirmed to begin flying to the airport, while flight to Jeju Island will be synchronized with international flights.

As for the first step, flight services will be begun between April and June in order to implement Korea-China Air Transport Agreement, which regulates chartered services to be offered no more than three months. Cities that will be connected with the airport between July and September will be decided in May, according to the province.

Jin Air, Korea’s low cost carrier, will fly four flights (two domestic, two international lines) every day, and it forecast that more than 1,300 will use its service. The company expects than up to 117,000 visitors will visit the airport during the three month.

It is the first time that the airport hosted routes to nine Chinese cities and Jeju Island since the airport began its operation in April 2002.

Gangwon-do plans to provide support for the airport’s promotion and marketing activities.

It will develop more stay-type tourism products to attract more Chinese tourists, push ahead 10 tourism-related provincial tasks for tourism infrastructure, encourage local residents to use Chinese carrier services and discuss with the Ministry of Justice for designation of the airport as the no-visa airport for 72 hours.

In April, the province will begin its cooperation with airline businesses to attract more Chinese investment until 2016 to in a bid to prepare for expansion of air routes and create more profits for the province Beside the effort to maintain friendly relations, the province and Chinese cities will also enhance bilateral exchange in agricultural food processing and technology transfers.

The province established the foundation for vitalization of its airport by signing agreements with various air carriers including Jin Air to operate air routes to 23 cities in China.

“The province will use of this opportunity to foster Yangyang International Airport to become a key international airport in the Northeast region and vitalize local economy,” said Choi Moon-soon, Governor of Gangwon-do.
