Gangwon to Invest KRW 79.9 Bn in 37 Strategic Industries

(CHUNCHEON = Newsis) Gangwon-do announced its plan for 2014 to foster its strategic industries in an effort to create momentum new growth engine that pursues creative fusion across industries.

The province will push ahead its development strategy for 2014 “four belts, three regions, two special zones”, and foster its strategic industries to take share of 15 percent (KRW 4.5 trillion) of gross regional domestic product (GRDP).

In 2012, total sales of the province’s strategic industries were about KRW 3.8 trillion, which accounted for about nine percent of its GRDP. It expects about KRW 4.2 trillion for total sales for 2013.

The province decided to focus on fostering the “new nano-bio industry”, which combines the bio, medical appliance and plasma industries, and nonferrous metal materials and parts industry at the eastern coast of Korea. It will also continue its support for the high-tech strategic industry, create more jobs for convergence industries and expand support for companies that carry out research and development to maximize profits.

To this end, the province will invest a total of KRW 79.9 billion in 37 business projects of eight different fields.

First, the province will invest KRW 59.1 billion in the second phase leading strategic industries of Gangwon megaregional economic zone to develop them as “new growth engine industries” of the province, which will lead to enhancement of global competitiveness of the province’s local industries. This year, a total of 176 small and medium-sized enterprises and government institutions will participate in 55 projects to provide the province with marketing and consulting services.

New regional specialized industries, which are developed as the fundamentals for local industries, will receive investment of KRW 50 billion by 2016.

In particular, the province will invest KRW 17 billion this year in its specialized industries to create jobs and increase profits, and provide R&D and business support services for the industries that are capable of creating more employment opportunities.

Also, it will invest KRW 22 billion in seven business projects by 2016 as part of the “project to foster local-oriented industries”, and focus on providing support in the product development, technological support, expert training, network development and marketing activities.

It also plans to develop infrastructure for business support service by constructing an integrated support center in Wonju Medical Industry Techno Valley.

For promotion of science and technology, it will invest a total of KRW 50.32 billion by 2017 to operate a regional innovation center, which aims to provide support for research and development and commercialization of products to meet the local demands.

“New growth engine industries such as the nanobio new industry have limitless potential to grow and have great impact on the industries, so we decided to develop this industry as our core future growth engine. We also plan to operate the 3D printing technology center and plasma support center to discover more new markets,” said an official of the province.
