(CHUNCHEON = Yonhap News) Gangwon-do announced on March 9 that it will invest a total of KRW 53.6 billion in food and food service industries in a bid to successfully host the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The province is set to establish the “Gangwon Food Vision 2018” basic plan to pursue the successful hosting of the Winter Olympics and development of the province’s food and food service industries, and carry out various business and investment projects, starting from this year.

The province will focus on investing in key areas for its plan by 2017 such as developing the province’s food and food service industries, meeting the relevant international standards for food and food services and developing production and supply systems for food ingredients for the Winter Olympics.

The province will organize a governance to promote its food and food services industries, and develop eat-out districts with regional characteristics.

It plans to develop infrastructure to produce fresh agricultural products all the seasons of the year, and establish an Olympics food supply center to supply agricultural products that are produced by local residents.

Also, the province will carry out research and development projects to discover both new and traditional foods for the Olympics.

The province plans to organize a new Olympics food team, which will carry out business projects with the PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympics, various businesses and experts.

“We seek to provide distinguishing foods for the Olympic teams from around the world,” said an official of the province. “We will focus on improving our food and food services industries to the global level. This is a unique opportunity for the province’s food and food services industries to take another leap forward.”
