According to Yonhap News,

(SEJONG = Yonhap News) The city of Gangneung will use its idle land such as a sewage purification plant and a water reservoir in the region to build a solar power plant.

The city announced today that Mayor Choi Myeong-hee and CEO of Yeongnam Energy Service Kim Chan-ho will sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for promotion of privately-funded public solar power plant development on March 25 at the city hall.

The city aims to keep pace with the government’s new and renewable energy policy and achieve the “low carbon, green growth” vision and transform Gangneung into a green city to successfully hold the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics.

Under the agreement, Yeongnam Energy Service will invest a total of KRW 5 billion to build and operate a 1.8MW solar power plant on the city’s idle lands such as a sewage purification plant and a water reservoir in the region.

The solar power plant will be run by the company for 15 years, and will be donated to the city afterwards.

The plant is expected to generate KRW 5.988 billion of total revenue, including KRW 540 million of rent income and KRW 5.448 billion of operating income.

By building and operating a 1.8 MW solar power plant, the city will be able to supply 2,300 MW h of electricity per annum.

The amount will suffice the energy needs of 630 households with four family members and reduce about 3,620 barrels of oil use every year. It will also cut the carbon dioxide emission by 1,000 tons, showing the equal effect of planting about 140,000 pine trees in the region.

“Together with the 842KW solar power plant at Gangneung sewage purification plant and hydroelectric power plant at Hongje sewage purification plant, the solar power plant will lay a foundation for the successful Winter Olympics,” said an official of Gangneung.
