(CHUNCHEON = Yonhap News) The Gangwon Province announced on March 30 that it will further strengthen its supporting policies for farmers and the farming industry in order to minimize damages from free trade agreements (FTAs).

On the same day, Choi Moon-soon, Governor of Gangwon, held a special meeting with the agriculture and livestock food bureau and rural policy division and called for strengthened supporting policies for rural communities and relevant industries.

The meeting was held to prepare firm policies for achieving competitive advantages of the provincial farming and livestock industries amid rising anxiety over the end of delayed tariffication.

To this end, the province decided to allocate more funds to the agricultural industry and strengthen the related policies to minimize damages that might occur due to FTAs.

Gangwon will intensively foster the 6th industry such as the processing industry, food industry and rural tourism industry. It will also systematize producer and expand funding for its check-off fund program to stabilize its rural management.

In particular, the province pledged to implement rural policies that largely focus on highly marketable products in an effort to expand into markets overseas and exports to China.
