Yangyang Int’l Airport to Start Direct Flights to 10 Chinese Cities

(CHUNCHEON=Yonhap News) The Gangwon provincial government announced on May 12 that Yangyang International Airport will start 10 chartered direct flights services to mainland China beginning this July.

The scheduled flights are expected to cover 10 different cities in five regions in mainland China. Cities to be covered are Tianjin, Yanji, Harbin, Dalian, Zhengzhou, Yinchuan, Hefei, Hangzhou, Nanchang and Xiamen.

Regular flight between Yangyang and Shanghai will keep operating. And the flight linking Yangyang and Vladivostok, which first took to the skies on May 2, will also in service for the future.

Eight flights including Shenyang will be halted due to an aeronautical agreement between Korea and China.

Jin Air, a low cost airline originating from Korea, will start its operation with its Boeing 737, seating 189 passengers of single class. The budget airline expects the number of passengers to exceed 93,000 by September 30 this year.

The Gangwon provincial government plans to promote the flights, at home and abroad, to keep the flights linking two countries. And the government also intends to take full advantage of three tourism offices located in mainland China.

“We’re now seeing the potential growth for Yangyang International Airport through scheduled overseas flights. We ‘re going to diversify flights between our country and other Northeast Asian countries” An official said.
