According to Yonhap News,

(SOKCHO=Yonhap News) The city of Sokcho in Gangwon Province is to cover 90 percent of its required electricity for operation of the city’s equipment thanks in large to generation units for new renewable energy installed in Water Quality Center (a sewage treatment plant). Sokcho announced on May 23 that the construction will be completed by the end of the next month.

The facilities to be established in the hinterlands of the center will generate an annual energy output of 200,000 KWh. The city expects to sell the generated energy to Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), thereby making KRW 30 million annually.

Last year, the City of Sokcho established a combined heat and power generator from biogas, an annual output of 1,800 Mwh, in the center and sold the generated energy to KEPCO, making KRW 290 million in profits.

The power generator from biogas basically uses domestic sewage and gases from food waste treatment. So a growing number of local governments nationwide are setting up the generator in that it recycles wasted energy.

“Once the facilities are in full operation, the center will cover 90 percent of required energy annually by selling generated electricity. ”a city official said.
