(CHUNCHEON=NEWSIS) Gangwon Province will execute action plans to promote food and restaurant service industry related to the Winter Olympics for the successful hosting of the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.

The action plans, which are a follow-up measure of the “Gangwon Food Vision 2018” basic plan that was announced last March, are not only to enhance the recognition of Korean food and improve the facilities and environment of restaurant service industry by developing both traditional and fusion cuisine of the region, but also to bring a paradigm shift in food service.

To reach broad consensus in Gangwon Province to develop food and restaurant service industry related to the Winter Olympics as a new growth engine, nine departments of the province including the Tourism Policy Department, the Food & Medicine Division and the Fisheries Policy Department will build close cooperation to efficiently carry out their roles.

A total of KRW 91.5 billion will be invested for four years from next year to 2018 on the following action plans for the 19 detailed tasks under the 4 strategies: First, the Province will come up with various dishes related to the Winter Olympics with local products to develop and distribute traditional and fusion cuisine of Gangwon Province. In addition, they will commercialize their traditional food to not only attract visitors but also to globalize the Korean food culture with food that suits foreigners’ palates.

Next, they will create a sophisticated yet regionally unique restaurant zone to improve the standard of restaurant service. Also, restaurants that provide excellent food, facility and environment to foreigners will be designated as “Best Restaurants” in Gangwon Province. They plan to carry out education on improving the standard of restaurant service to provide clean and well-managed food with good waiter service.

Furthermore, Gangwon Province will strengthen publicity and marketing of food related to the Winter Olympics by supporting food exhibition and special sale event of agricultural and fishery goods, reinvigorating traditional food, and designating Olympic restaurants to change the recognition on local foods.

In addition, the Province plans to establish a base for the production and process of food for the Olympics to secure food safety by producing fresh agricultural goods all year round, supporting processing facilities for fishery products and providing safe food during the Olympics.
