Gangwon Province has recently signed an agreement with Russia's Mega Tour Company to launch new routes to Yangyang International Airport from two far eastern cities -- Khabarovsk and Vladivostok.

Khabarovsk is Russia's second-largest city, with 1.34 million residents. Founded in 1858 as a military outpost, the northeastern city has grown into a large logistics and heavy industry hub.

Also located near the border with China and North Korea, Vladivostok is a port city with a population of 620,000. It hosted the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in 2012. There is a ferry service in operation linking Vladivostok and South Korea's eastern port of Sokcho.

The latest move is part of the provincial government's efforts to develop tourism infrastructure in the run-up to the 2018 Winter Olympic Games to be held in PyeongChang, located near Yangyang International Airport.

The provincial government will closely monitor the occupancy rate and passenger feedback to gauge the feasibility of launching regular flights to transport Russian athletes during the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, Yoo said.

Yangyang International Airport, previously abandoned due to a lack of travelers, has transformed itself into a new gateway for Chinese travelers after a new visa program took effect in April that allows Chinese to stay in the province for 72 hours without a visa.

The number of passengers using the airport topped 100,000 as of late July for the first time since it was built in 2002.

Along with the new routes, the provincial government is also preparing package programs with the Russian tour agency for tourists who visit each other's country.
