The five-day Chuncheon 2014 International Leisure Sports Festival kicked off on Aug. 29 in Chuncheon, 85 kilometers northeast of Seoul. Some 16,000 athletes from 50 different countries, including South Korea, took part in 17 events -- three for international competition and 14 for domestic competition -- during the festival, the organizing committee said.

The number of people who visited the third edition of the festival, including athletes and revellers to a K-pop concert on the opening day, was provisionally tallied at 110,000, more than an earlier estimate, it said.

"This year's festival provided a chance for Chuncheon, with beautiful scenery and international sports facilities, to grow into an international leisure-sports city," the Chuncheon mayor and festival director Choi Dong-yong said.

The success was attributed to the festival's diverse programs for visitors interested in leisure sports.

Unlike previous festivals, this year's event offered various exhibitions and "hands-on experience" programs for visitors.

"The diversification of programs for visitors played a big role in expanding the base of leisure sports and making the festival a tourist attraction," Kim Yong-eun, secretary-general of the organizing committee said.

The festival's international events -- paramotor slalom, inline slalom and extreme sports -- also attracted many spectators.

An arena where extreme sports such as aggressive inline skating, skateboarding and BMX were held was crowded with spectators on each of the days, making seats hard to come by.

During the period, some 150 volunteers ranging from teens to elderly citizens provided help.

Boosted by this year's success, Choi said the city needs to consider making it an annual event and provide various culture-art programs at night for visitors who stay throughout the festival period.

"We should consider holding the festival every year and add more culture-art programs so people can enjoy leisure sports during the day and culture at night," he said.
