According to Yonhap News,

Wonju-si, Gangwon-do announced on June 27 that it was selected for the '2022 Special Purpose Manned and Unmanned Industrial Ecosystem Creation Project' hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE).

It is a project to build Korea's first mid- and large-scale drone manned and unmanned test and evaluation center in the Buron General Industrial Complex, with a total investment of KRW 29 billion, including KRW 18.7 billion from national and provincial funds by 2024.

The center will be equipped with such facilities as flight control stability evaluation equipment, combined environmental test equipment for icing, rainfall, and snowfall, as well as special-purpose manned and unmanned drone environmental test equipment.

This project will support development and certification process of key parts for commercialization of urban air mobility (UAM), which is being developed mainly by large enterprises and local governments.

So far, there was no support facility for test and certification of large-scale manned and unmanned drones.

Under this circumstance, the city plans to lead the future mobility industry by establishing an integrated test and evaluation support system bringing together dispersed special-purpose manned and unmanned drones.

The city has been selected as the only drone special regulation-free zone in the province and a project for building a drone demonstration city.

In addition, it also plans to go ahead with a drone cluster creation project that will attract UAM mass production plants and related industries within the Buron General Industrial Complex.
