According to Yonhap News,

It was found that the number of visitors to tourist destinations in Gangwon State has recovered, led by foreigners.

On May 23, Gangwon State said that a total of 17.65 million tourists visited 445 major tourist destinations in 18 cities and counties in Gangwon State during the first quarter of this year.

It is a 3.4% increase from the same period last year.

By period, the number of tourists was 7.76 million in January, 5.52 million in February, and 4.37 million in March.

By region, Sokcho-si (3.316 million) top the list, followed by Jeongseon-gun (1.944 million), Hwacheon-gun (1.748 million), Chuncheon-si (1.641 million), and Hongcheon-gun (1.169 million).

During the same period, 17.21 million Koreans visited tourist destinations in Gangwon State, up 2.4% from the same period last year.

On the other hand, a total of 440,000 foreign tourists visited during the same period, recording a substantial increase of 67.7% from the same period last year.

Foreign tourists visited Chuncheon Nami Island (150,000 people) the most, followed by Sokcho Seoraksan National Park (40,000 people) and Chuncheon Gangchon Rail Park (30,000 people).

Gangwon State attributed the large increase in foreign tourists to the rising travel demand after COVID-19 pandemic and the popularity of "K-content."

In line with the recovery of the tourism market, Gangwon State will hold a Gangwon International Tourism Road Show targeting Greater China, Southeast Asia, and Japan, and participate in international tourism fairs and push for the operation of tourism taxis for individual foreign tourists.

It also plans to implement tourism projects including developing tourism products of special themes such as Hallyu, leisure, sports, and wellness.

An official from Gangwon State said, "we will make all-out efforts to respond quickly to rapidly changing global tourism trends, through content development and infrastructure expansion to meet demand of tourists".
