According to Yonhap News,

(SEOUL=Yonhap News) Two old industrial complexes in Busan and Cheonan will be renovated as high-tech industrial parks.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on December 12 that it has newly designated the Busan Sinpyeong-Jangnim General Industrial Complex and Cheonan 2nd General Industrial Complex as Innovation Industrial Complexes of this year.

Innovation Industrial Complexes are selected from aged industrial complexes that have been in operation for over 20 years. Designated industrial complexes are transformed into urban-type advanced complexes supported by industrial complex improvement funds, innovation support centers, and others.

A total of 17 industrial sites were selected for the renovation project since 2014 when the Ministry first kicked off the project.

On the other hand, Inha University Consortium (the Songdo Knowledge & Information Industry Complex), Jeju National University Consortium (Jeju Science Park) and Mokpo National University (Naju Innovation Industrial Complex) were newly selected for industry-academic cooperation district support project.

The cooperation district project was launched to attract universities and corporate research institutes in industrial complexes in a bid to encourage customized education and joint research and development between businesses and academia.

With the designation of three more districts this time, the Ministry of Industry has established 13 such districts since 2011.

"When 13 districts are set up by 2020, 9,000 students from 62 departments of 27 universities will move to industrial complexes to promote academic-industrial cooperation," a ministry official said.
