According to Yonhap News,

(JEJU=Yonhap News) Jeju Island and Japan's Aomori Prefecture officially set out on a path for co-prosperity after entering a sister city agreement.

Jeju announced that 44 delegates from the Japanese prefecture including Governor Shingo Mimura visited the island for a three-day stay.

It is the first return visit from Aomori after Jeju Governor Won Hee-ryong went to Japan to sign a sister city agreement last year.

Jeju and Aomori will forge stronger partnership as sister cities by facilitating exchanges in various fields, including the world natural heritage, culture, renewable energy research, tourism promotion, and sports exchanges.

Aomori, located in the northern part of Japan’s main island of Honshu, is Japan's largest producer of apple and garlic. Its Shirakami-Sanch, a beech tree forest, was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. The city also hosts Nebuta festival, one of three biggest festivals in Japan. It also has Japan's largest wind farm.

Governor Mimura has visited Jeju for five times and Aomori provincial officials have come to Jeju every year since 2007. Two cities entered into a friendship agreement in 2011 and agreed to strengthen its partnership by forging sisterhood relations last year.
