(JEJU=Yonhap News) The village of Dongbok on Jeju Island, where a landfill and incineration plant is set to be constructed, has been selected to receive funding through the national government's Eco-friendly Energy Town project.
The province of Jeju announced May 1 that the Jeju Environment Resources Circulation Center being built in Dongbok-ri, Gujwa-eup, Jeju City, made the final list of eco-friendly energy towns to receive funding through a project led by the Ministry of Environment.
The project was introduced to use wasted energy from NIMBY facilities such as waste incineration plants to create an additional income for local residents and simultaneously solve existing environmental and energy-related problems.
A key factor in the decision was the fact that the residents took the lead in having the Jeju Environmnet Resources Circulation Center choose Dongbuk as its location.
When complete, the center will use the heat energy generated from incinerating waste to raise aquarium fish and dry agricultural products, creating an additional source of income for the local residents.
