Jeju to Create Detailed Map for Autonomous Cars

(JEJU=Yonhap News) Jeju Province announced February 9 that it will build a detailed map for self-driving electric vehicles with the Jeju Free International City Development Center (JDC) and Nexen Tech, and use it to test drive various autonomous cars sold by different automakers.

To this end, the three parties will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on February 12 at the provincial government building.

The signing ceremony will be attended by Jeju governor Won Hee-ryong, JDC chairman Lee Kwang-hee, and Nexen Tech's internal director and former French prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin, amon others.

Following the signing, the province will provide administrative support so that the map-making project can be carried out smoothly, JDC will support the autonomous vehicle test drives, and Nexen Tech will build the map, and recruit foreign and Korean automakers to test drive their autonomous cars using the map.

The province expects the map will help realize roads without traffic accidents or congestion, and contribute to the creation of infrastructure and industrial ecosystem in connection with the fourth industrial revolution.
