According to Yonhap News,

(JEJU=Yonhap News) A symposium on Jeju’s water policy reform will be held on March 16 at the Jeju Welcome Center. The symposium is aimed at discussing ways to develop sustainable water management policies for the province.

The symposium, which celebrates the 26th World Water Day, is co-organized by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Water Resources Division and the Korea Society of Water and Wastewater. The event will be attended by around 300 experts and representatives in the waterworks, wastewater, and water resources sectors in Korea, including: President Bae Jae-Ho, Korea Society of Water and Wastewater; Professor Gu Ja-Yong, University of Seoul; Emeritus Professor Hyeon In-Hwan, Dankook University; Professor Park Gyu-Hong, Chung-Ang University; Professor Kim Jin-Geun, Jeju National University; and Mr. Cho Hee-Song, Head of the Ministry of Environment Drinking Water Policy Division.

The participants will share their ideas on how to reform Jeju’s water policies and programs in response to the crises brought on by population and tourist increase, the changes in climate and precipitation patterns and the resulting decrease of the underground water level, and the decrease of spring water.

The symposium’s presentations and discussions will cover the following six major topics: the direction of the Ministry of Environment’s drinking water policies and the modernization of local waterworks, the water loss improvement project and asset management, current issues and improvements for the waterworks and sewage systems in Jeju, improvements for Jeju’s sewage management, and the direction for Jeju’s water resources management policies.

Through the symposium, Jeju plans to build a foundation for determining the direction of its long-/medium-term water policies for waterworks improvements, the efficient management of the water loss improvement project, and stable water supply.
