According to Pulse by Maeil Business News Korea,

Four Korean companies - LG Uplus, KB Card, Jeju Pass and Handy Car - will work together to launch a pilot connected car service for car rental customers in the southern resort island Jeju, also a test bed for electric and automated vehicles.

Mobile carrier LG Uplus said on Sunday the four firms signed a memorandum of understanding to provide Jeju Pass customers with vehicles equipped with on-board diagnostics (OBD) that automatically store data on car breakdown, emission level, and location.

The OBD combined with LG Uplus’ LTE modem is linked to the customer’s smartphone app online to determine the vehicle’s location and process payment information.

The four are also planning to explore a new connected car service by collecting the customer’s consumption pattern along the driving path and actual consumption versus the number of visiting customers, and other data not easy to collect by individual businesses. Other potential services include remote car health monitoring and intelligent commerce services.

Customers are able to evaluate their driving habit through the app and high score winners are entitled to free airplane tickets and other gifts, LG Uplus said. The pilot service will last until Aug. 31.
