Seogwipo and Chongming District Become Friendship Cities

(SEOGWIPO=Yonhap News) Seogwipo, Jeju and Chongming District, Shanghai signed an agreement to become friendship cities.

On June 20, Seogwipo Mayor Lee Sang-sun and Chongming District Head Lee Jjeong attended a signing ceremony for the agreement in Seogwipo City Hall.

The two cities agreed on exchange and cooperation in various areas including the economy, trade, tourism, technology and environmental protection.

Also, the cities agreed to set up a long-term contact mechanism to work on cooperative and joint projects.

Mayor Lee remarked, "I means a great deal to officially become friendship cities on the basis of our long-held friendship and exchanges. Based our common interests in establishing eco-friendly eco-cities, we look forward to the active and mutual development of our tourism industry, ecology and economic exchanges.

Chongming District is the the largest sand island in China, located in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River north of Shanghai, and consists of three islands: Chungming Island, Changsin Island and Huangsha Island.

They have a population of 690,000 and is just a bit smaller than Jeju Island at 1,413㎢.
