According to Yonhap News,

It has been proposed that Honam area and Jeju-do should come together to establish a cross-regional new and renewable energy economic community.

On July 18, Gwangju Institute held a policy discussion meeting at the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center in Gwangju to revitalize distributed energy in Honam area and Jeju-do and devise strategies.

Kim Seung-wan, a professor of electrical engineering at Chungnam National University, gave a lecture on "Honam's Strategy in the Era of Distributed Energy." And experts from Gwangju, Jeonbuk, Jeonnam, and Jeju Research Institutes also gave presentations on selected topics.

Dr. Park Dong-won of the Gwangju Institute suggested that it is necessary to form a cross-regional energy economic community, going a step further from the mega-city economic alliance in Honam region.

He predicted that "the capabilities of supplying renewable energy will serve as a competitive edge in the high-tech industries," saying that "we need to supply renewable energy of 1,000 GW every year from 2030 to achieve the Net Zero by 2050."

He suggested that "Honam and Jeju areas are the best places to attract high-tech strategic industries as it secured green power and hydrogen," pointing out that "data centers in the metropolitan area are unable to provide stable power, making it necessary to reduce imbalance in supply between regions through decentralization in order to prepare readiness in national disasters."

He also laid out other ideas, such as Gwangju, Jeonbuk, Jeonnam, and Jeju take the lead in power generation projects by building offshore wind power generation belt, in which they jointly push for offshore wind power development and connected power generation and transmission networks.

Dr. Kim also proposed that "it is necessary to minimize the construction of transmission networks to move towards the era of distributed energy, away from centralized power supply system," adding that "we need to move away from the existing method of transmitting energy produced in regions to the metropolitan area."

Gwangju's mayor said in a congratulatory speech that "to move towards the Local Era, we need to decentralize finances and energy," adding that "Honam and Jeju will always take the lead in realizing cooperation and prosperity by taking energy as a stepping stone."
