(Jeju = NEWSIS) Reporter Yang Young-jeon – An international academic conference with world-renowned authority in data mining (the process of extracting useful information from vast datasets) and artificial intelligence (AI) will be held in Jeju.

Jeju Province announced on the 5th that 'ACM SIGKDD 2026' will take place at the Jeju International Convention Center from August 9 to 13. Being held in South Korea for the first time since its establishment in 1998, this year's event will draw around 3,500 participants, including representatives from global big tech companies such as Google, Alibaba, Amazon, Airbnb, Microsoft, and Apple.

This conference has been hosted since 1998 by ACM, the world's first computer science academic association founded in 1947. It serves as a platform where global researchers and industry experts share the latest research findings and application cases in the fields of data mining, knowledge discovery, artificial intelligence, and big data.

Keynote speakers at the conference will include Jeff Dean, Chief Scientist at Google; Jingren Zhou, Vice President of Alibaba; and Regina Barzilay, Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

They will present the latest trends in AI along with future development directions for AI-based research and industries, such as disease diagnosis and treatment.

A special program, 'Korea Day,' will introduce South Korea's AI policy and industrial competitiveness to the global stage.

Leading domestic companies including Naver, LG AI Research, SK Hynix, HD Hyundai, Samsung Electronics, Krafton, and Amorepacific will participate to showcase their AI transformation (AX) vision and AI technology applications across various sectors such as semiconductors, manufacturing, gaming, and cosmetics.

Jeju Province expects that the arrival of numerous international researchers and industry leaders will bring positive effects not only to the MICE industry but also to tourism and the local economy as a whole.

Kim Yang-bo, Director General of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau of Jeju Province, stated, "By hosting this premier AI academic conference, Jeju can further elevate its status as an international convention city." He added, "We expect this to be a wonderful opportunity to promote Jeju's charms to the researchers and corporate representatives visiting during the event."
