Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik said in a keynote speech that "We have to pursue co-prosperity and compassionate capitalism based on ethical management and responsibility of capital," emphasizing that "We have to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor to achieve co-prosperity in East Asia."

He also criticized that "North Korea's recent provocations pose a threat not only to the Korean Peninsula but to East Asia and the whole world. The North tried to send GPS jamming signals, wreaking havoc with civilian aviation and fishing fleets."

Jeju Governor U Geun-min said in an opening speech that "There are mixed views over changes in political and environmental landscapes of global powers. We have to deal with issues of environment, climate change, energy, food and trade in a peaceful and integrated manner."

President of East Asia Foundation Gong Ro-myeong emphasized in a welcoming speech that "East Asia has been driving the global economy even amid the global financial crisis. Jeju Forum will be a venue to reflect upon Asia's dynamic economy and to call on the world to cooperate in addressing interconnected issues."

This year's forum was held under the theme of "New Trend and Future of Asia," being classified into 60 sessions including peace, economy and environment.
